I am trying to compile mplayer from source in opensuse 10.2, but here is the problem. It seems to configure just fine, but hangs on make.

Hi. If you cannot compile, why don't you install from the RPM? Look for mplayer in packman repository.
BTW you miss some dependencies... first of all DirectFB, not found from configure but required by compilation!

I went to look for one of the "Cool Solutions" that covered installing Media apps, but it seems it was to old.

There is a unixheads repo that has the packman rpms. You can add it to "YaST2 -> Installation Sources".

Then when there is an application like xine or mplayer, you can filter the sofware installer by source and select the packman site. A second filter box will appear, where you can enter xine or mplayer, whatever. You can select "All in this list " -> "Update if newer version available" or "All in this list -> "Update unconditionally".

This is how I updated from 10.1 to 10.1-remastered.
