No remote access to XFree86 server with SuSE 9.1

Hi SuSE 9.1 users!

I have a problem with my X server when I try to access it with a DISPLAY environment variable which is different to the default value ":0". Look at the following:

$ export DISPLAY=localhost:0
$ xeyes
Error: Can't open display: localhost:0

Even if I try
$ xhost +localhost
or (yuk!)
$ xhost +
I always get the same error message when starting any application which has to connect to the X server. It is no problem, however, to run an application remotely with my other distros, Debian Sid and Mandrakelinux 10.1.

Can anyone help me, please???

You could try to delete the -nolisten tcp tag in /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers

I guess this is for remote connection. Good luck!

Thank you very much! Your hint has been very useful.

What I have really done is the following:
I changed /etc/X11/xdm/Xservers like you told me, but this didn't change anything. So I greped some X directories trying to find -nolisten tcp. I found it in SuSE's startx script, which said the following:

Code:
# handle TCP port 6000
. /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager
test "$DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN" != "yes" && \
    serverargs="$serverargs -nolisten tcp"
So I changed /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager:
DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER_TCP_PORT_6000_OPEN="yes"
And it worked!

Cool, how you found the solution!

I looked at it myself now and found the hint to use ssh access instead. Maybe this is the better (more secure) way to do it?!

I'm sure you are right (the name says it all)! But currently I like this solution. I don't have to read my mail via fetchmail any more and can use that beautiful kmail remotely!

If you know how to use such a secure connection to an X server, please let me know! Thank you again for helping me!

I got it! X ssh access is so easy! I read the how-to about X Remote Applications. First I removed the tcp connection from my X server (in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager) and then I runned:

$ ssh -X -lloginname hostname
Enter your password
remote$ kmail

Done!
