Remote access / X server with mandrake

Hi,

This is probably a dumb question (and not phrased correctly) but here goes...

I'm doing a Linux course at college and they say we can use an "X server" such as Cygwin running on our home Windows machine to connect to the college's linux server and do course work. However, since I've installed Mandrake 10.1 on my system, I thought there must be a way of accessing the college's system using that.

All I can find so far is something that looks like it might just give me terminal access.

Can anyone suggest anything?

Thanks,

Matt

I don't fully understand your question. If you need access to the server's console from home machine you can log in using ssh (account on a server needed). If you want to see the picture of some window manager runing on remote server there should be VNC server set on the remote machine and VNC wiever on yours.

I don't know if I was helpful, I hope so ...

How are you connecting to the server using Cygwin? If you are using ssh, then you could always run it with the -X flag from your mandrake box and that would allow X forwarding from the college's system.

Thanks for your help guys. I'm not sure there's a VNC server set up, and I haven't downloaded Cygwin or anything, but you've given me some stuff to play around with... cheers!

hmmm

What I think you are looking for is an XDMCP client.
