Mount existing /opt onto new array

I have a server with SLES10 SP1 and running RAID 5. On this RAID 5 is /opt which contains everything i have installed into /opt (mailserver being one of them). I want to move /opt off of the raid 5 and onto a new array. I have this array configured, partitioned and formatted into reiserfs. I thought i could now copy the existing /opt files and folders onto the new array by using cp -p source dest but i have not been able to get this to work. I have mounted the new array /dev/sdb and when i do this all the existing files and folders on the / turn to paper symbols with tacks on the top left. I have edited the fstab file. Here is what the unedited fstab looks like:
/dev/sda2 / reiserfs acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/sda1 swap swap defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user,sync 0 0

I made this edit to the fstab file:
/dev/sdb /opt reiserfs acl,user_xattr 2 2

Long story short, can someone help me move (without breaking the existing /opt) the existing /opt files and folders onto the new disk?

cp -Rp as root should do the trick. What are the permissions on the newly created files?

I am not sure i have the new array mounted right as the existing files turn to paper symbols with tacks on the top left. When i umount that new array, the existing files and folders turn back into folder symbols. There aren't any newly created files as the cp does not work. Not sure what to do from here?

There is existing data on the array on which you wish to place /opt?

What permissions are on the files in question?

Are the files and folders on the new array the same files and folders as on the old /opt?

There aren't any existing files on the drive. It is a new array and will serve only /opt files and folders.

Are the files and folders on the new array the same files and folders as on the old /opt?
I have not made it this far; i am trying to get the old /opt files and folders onto the empty/new array so they will work just as if they were the old /opt

Okay, so mount the new array, move the files over, and then mount the array on /opt... I'm not sure at what point the process is failing for you.
