Linux newbie question..sorry

Hello,

Im new to linux.
I have been handed down the task to explore this area.

We have currently 4-5 Netware6/6.5 servers and window(xp) clients.

What we want is to install a linux file server.

In the end all i want is that the users can map to the linux box and save
their files to the linux box....the same way as what the netware
servers do.

Should i be looking at SLES9???
How do i installed the linux box to the NDW tree?

I dont know where to start.....
Just some general direction would be enough.

Thanks

Also...have i posted this thread in the right area?

Regards,
S.Cheung

1. "File sharing" is easy

Google for "samba"

2. I'm not sure if you just need to "share files" (which is a no-brainer), or
if you have some requirement to coexist with Netware and/or Netware's
underlying IPX/SPX network transport.

I'm sure Novell would be able to answer any informal questions about
a "migration strategy" from Netware to Linux.

3. SuSE Linux Enterprise is quite possibly overkill: you might easily be
able to get by with SuSE Professional.

4. By "NDW", do you mean "Norton Desktop"? If so, there shouldn't be any
need to use Norton Desktop over Windows Explorer (for Windows clients) or
Nautilus or Konqueror (for Linux clients).

Most of all, I'd encourage you to get a copy of Linux (e.g. SuSE Linux professional) in-house, install it, and play with it.

The best thing you can do before investing in a new infrastructure is to familiarize yourself with Linux, first. Experiment. Ask questions. Then you'd be in a much better position to decide how best to migrate from Netware.

IMHO .. PSM
