Kernel Problem

I was looking in the Control Center under "Linux Kernel" and it said this:

"No hardware architecture was specified! Perhaps the kernel source is not installed on this system, or the path to the kernel sources is entered incorrectly."

Is this bad? what does it mean? Can i fix it? should i fix it?

It's not bad, it means that perhaps you've not installed the kernel source. Look in /usr/src/ for a source directory for your kernel, if it is there after all then soft link it to /usr/src/linux.

You'll find you need kernel sources if you ever wish to change the features of your kernel, or if you compile kernel modules. For this reason it might be prudent to install a copy of the sources for your kernel, which are probably packaged up at the same place your kernel is. Alternatively, you could obtain the vanilla sources at www.kernel.org, but your running kernel might be different to these.

Chris.

On my system, my kernel source is at:
/usr/src/linux-2.6.5-7.111.19

There should be a link to it from /usr/src/linux. If there isn't, then:

[code]
cd /usr/src
ln -s linux-2.6.5-7.111.19 linux
[code]
It's better to use "cd" first in this case to make the link a relative path. "ls -l" should have a line that looks kinda like this:
[code]
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 2004-12-28 00:16 linux -> linux-2.6.5-7.111.19
[code]
