Lightbulb KDE Login Dialogue on 3.5.5 - how to change it

FYI: This is a preemptive bit of info in case anyone here has the same problem. After upgrading to KDE 3.5.5 on openSUSE 10.1, my login screen was changed to the KDM default instead of the one from Novell. I was able to change it back using the "genkdmconf --no-old" instructions found here:

KDE Login Dialogue on 3.5.5 - how to change it

You can find the settings under the following:

Suse Start Menu ---->Personal Settings ---->Appearance and Themes ---->Splash Screen

Good Luck

Login Screen or Splash?

Thanks, but that didn't work for me. I think this changes only the splash screen while the desktop is loading, but it's the login screen that needs changing just before the splash.

I'm sorry if this is off topic but how did you upgrade to 3.5.5?
I downloaded the packages from http://software.opensuse.org/downloa...x_10.1/x86_64/ two days ago but when I try to update from the console using "rpm -Uhv *.rpm" or using the new update manager I get the following error:

Code:
Unresolved dependencies:
Updating kdelibs3-devel-3.5.1-47.x86_64[System packages] to kdelibs3-devel-3.5.5-19.1.x86_64[kde_2006-10-17]
There are no installable providers of dbus-1-qt for kdelibs3-devel-3.5.5-19.1.x86_64[kde_2006-10-17]
I searched for dbus-1-qt but I could not find it anywhere in the repository.

The error is telling you that you are missing packages that are needed by your system in order to install the package.

The missing packages are:
dbus-1-qt

You can find this package from rpm.pbone.net

Install this before you install KDE

yast shows that the package "dbus-1-qt3 - QT3/KDE bindings for D-BUS" is already installed. The system is looking for a version of dbus-1-qt for version 3.5.5 of KDE but the only version installed is for version 3.5.1

Try to find the package version that is missing on rpm.pbone.net or something like it. Update to the version requested. You can also try to install the dev packages, sometimes this helps. The latest version that I found was 3.52-8 Google around and you WILL find the proper package.

Also you should look on the KDE website for instructions about adding repositories in YaST of Smart, that way all packages needed will be installed at the same time.

This is what I did to install KDE 3.5.5... Firstly, I had problems with the new YAST in SUSE 10.1, so I abandoned it in favor of Smart. These instructions from Guru's site did the trick:

/dev/loki: How to install and use smart on SUSE Linux 10.1
http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2006/05...t-on-suse.html

After the Smart GUI was working, I did these steps from a console to get KDE, (I'm going from memory):

smart update
smart upgrade

If you get errors during the update, then make sure to resolve them. (I had to change the [suse-kde] channel to a mirror closer to me so the downloads would succeed). The upgrade command will also find all other packages that need upgrading, not just KDE. If you want just KDE, then you can do something like this:

smart upgrade kde*

Or just use the GUI version of Smart to find the KDE meta package. Dependencies are all handled by Smart.
