This is the output that it gave me:
linux:/home/justin # zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_MAC_PARTITION
CONFIG_MAC_PARTITION=y
linux:/home/justin # zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_HFSPLUS
CONFIG_HFSPLUS_FS=m
linux:/home/justin # zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION
CONFIG_EFI_PARTITION=y
linux:/home/justin #
So what you are saying is that I should convert the Shuffle to FAT32. Then try plugging it into the computer without an entry in fstab. If it automounts, gtkpod should make it work, as long as its configuration is set up right. If it still doesn't work, I should put the line back into the fstab. I have no idea how to turn off the automount, but that is a bit premature.
One other question at this point. It seems like I have read somewhere that everytime I remove the iPod from the computer, I should unmount it first. Is this absolutely necessary, even if the automount is turned on?
