When you come to the login screen, click on the word "session" (or something like that)...you will see the available window managers (i.e. KDE, Gnome, Safe Mode Terminal, etc.).
...mmm... i disabled the login screen and saw your 'session' you were referring to. though in the list i can't see gnome. i must definitely have something wrong here. anyone....?
It sounds like you have auto login enabled. Sure, if you disable the auto login business you will be prompted with the login screen after booting up. You can choose your window manager there. There may be a way to make Gnome the default window manager in YaST or some configuration file and keep auto login enabled, but I don't know off the top of my head.
