Flashing Gnome Login And Missing Gnome Panels, Gnome is borked! openSuse 10.2
Greetings,
I'm having problems under 10.2 whereby the gnome login prompt is flashing at me after I see the nvidia splash screen. When it flashes, I can just barely make out the text box where the username and password is entered, but little else. This continues on infinitum, until I kill the X server, switch to run level 3, then try to startx again, at which point I can successfully reach my desktop. However, my desktop is corrupted: my gnome panels move in and out of view at the top and bottom of the screen before disappearing entirely, and other applications don't behave themselves properly (e.g. compiz-fusion does not load, mouse scroll wheel doesn't work, can't run gnome control-center).
I installed the latest nvidia drivers in an attempt to fix the problem. They did install successfully, but the problem still remains. My Xorg.0.log file continually spews (WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory) at the bottom of the file, but I'm not sure what this means. Does anyone have any ideas at all?

I would either reinstall GNOME with yum groupinstall or - have u tried reverting to your backed up version of xorg.conf? What happened that made the environment all screwed up?
Regarding the acpid make sure the service, i mean daemon, is running at startup.
