Cleaning Up SuSE 9.3 Fonts

Like all Linux distros, I find that SuSE 9.3's fonts are much less crisp and clear than those available in Windows and Mac. I understand that this is the result of a legal issue with "font hinting". I understand that SuSE ships with font hinting turned off for the obvious legal reasons.

I know from past experience that you can recompile freetype to turn font hinting on, and I have done this in past distros I have worked with.

I have discovered to my suprise that that there are two font packages installed in SuSE 9.3, (a) freetype-1.3.1 and (b) freetype2-2.1.9. I am not sure why there are two packages, and which one I should modify.

Has anyone done this already (rebuilding freetype), and can you offer any pointers? Thanks!
