Cant login via gui kdm nor gdm

Hello,
I did a YOU upgrade on a SuSE 9.1 to a 2.6.5-7.111.19-default. After upgrading I ran
mkinitrd and lilo, shutdown and rebooted. After reboot, I can't logged in via the gui anymore as either a regular user nor as root. I can however log-on via any of the
virtual consoles as root or as regular user.
No way to login into vt :0 or vt :1. I attempted setting /etc/sysconfig/network/displaymanager from kdm to gdm and same thing, neither root nor regular can log-on via vt :0 or vt :1. After logging on into one of the consoles, I can still issue a startx -- :2 (all the way to 5) and get an Xwindow (alt+F9 to alt+F12). A corresponding /tmp/.X11-unix/X2= device file appears when doing this.
Error is username or password invalid. I can see the username I type in in lowercase, therefore am sure the keyboard is okay. Anything I can reconfigure so kdm or gdm can again recognize the same authentication used in the console logged in ? I even tried removing ~userhome/.kde* , tried adding a new user via useradd hoping something new can perhaps be allowed, but still cant login via the gui with the new user.

HELP please.

Thanks in advance,
pkto

P.S. Compared to another working SuSE 9.1 /etc/X11/xdm/ directory contents and they both have same file sizes.

Can't login via gui kdm nor gdm

Okay, I have resolved the issue myself with assistance from #suse channel on freenode. Basically, I have to re-run SAX2 or xf86config and choose the correct keyboard layout. Somehow the YOU update changed the keyboard layout to Slavic and I did not notice it right away. Or it could have been the SAX2 causing the failure when I attempted to changed to a 3D display and X server failed during test if config is okay, so I have to type CTRL+ALT+Backspace to kill X.

Lesson learned:

It was not apparent to me at first that the keyboard was causing the problem because the logon name is all alphabetic and they seemed to be perfect at first glance. However the password I used have special characters and these were decoded improperly by the Linux authentication system which can not be seen when typing in to the log-in box (because keyboard mapping is Slavic and am an American). This did not even become apparent as there were no entries on the /var/log/messages of the failed log-on (strange). Its after several reboots and an attempt to type the special character on the xterm that I noticed what I typed is not what is displayed, therefore I summed up I must be doing the same thing during log-on (chars I type is not recognized by the authorization system). Verifying keyboard mapping via SAX2 solved the problem.
