application windows disappear and system locks

I'm using suse 11 and the other day when I minimised a window, instead of moving to the system tray it disappeared as did all others I opened after that. I finally found I could get to see them by using ctrl-f9 but they are transparent and when I click on one, the system locks completely then all I can do is turn it of.

I pretty new to linux and not that tech savy being over 60, hope some one can help me as I don't want to go back to windows at all.
