After install and boot Monitor Error

After many attempts at installation (I found a workaround) I succeeded in installing Suse 10.0. When the system re-booted it listed my 2 other OSs and I selected to boot Suse. All went well until my monitor went black and a blue screen [and I had hoped to never see one again!] centered itself and displayed the following message "ATTN: Out of Range H:72.4KHE V:68.OHZ. I have an Envision 17in CRT (new). Can someone tell me what this is and how to fix it? I've installed many other distributions and have never seen this problem before.

Sounds like tha default monitor settings chosen by Suse are incorrect: wrong horiz and vert refresh rates.

Boot the machine. When the grub menu comes up, you should see a prompt under the menu where you can add additional kernel parameters before booting. If you don't see it, press the letter e to edit the boot prompt. Assuming your installation defaulted to 16 bit graphics, add vga=791, then press enter. If your setup is 24 bit graphics, make that vga=792. Those are monitor resolutions (and hopefully refresh rates) supported my many monitor vendors.

Once you're in the system, you can use Sax to do a proper job of configuring the monitor. Make a selection, then click on the test button to see if your selection works.

bigrigdriver is right, Xwindows is driving your video card output at frequencies that your monitor doesn't support. One option is to boot to runlevel 3, (try "vga=791 init 3" on the kernel command line), and you can manually edit the file "/etc/X11/xorg.conf". Look for the monitor section and tweak the "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh" rates to something supported by your monitor. After that just try "startx" and see if it works, if it doesn't type "Ctrl-Alt-Bksp" to bail out of X and try a different frequency. You should be able to find the supported range of the monitor with documentation supplied with the monitor or on the web. We have some LCD monitors at work that have this problem, they show up in the monitor list when you install, but it sets them up to run at 82Hz when they support a max of 80Hz.
