monitor changed- error message on boot-

Help!

My considerate IT dept. changed my monitor whilst I was away for three days from a 19" crt to a 17" dell lcd. I'm running mandrake 9.2 as a dual boot system. Now when I select linux from lilo, linux runs through startup then when X starts the monitor displays

analog input cannot display this video mode

pressing ctrl-alt - to change the resolution down doesn't do any good. I tried ctrl-alt-F1 and I can log in as root. I then tried running xf86config, but aborted when it asked about monitor refresh rates- I've played with this on linux installations ages ago but have been recently spoiled by the autodetect routines of the new installation packages.

So, is there an easy way to reconfigure my Linux install for the new monitor?

If not, I may only want to get some files from this install and transfer them by ftp to my os x computer. How can I determine the IP address assigned to my linux machine from the text root session? I could then ftp to my linux machine and get the files I need.

Thanks in advance
foz

foz; question? have you asked ur IT dept
if they changed display units with out changing the settings u had prior to display units change? should consider asking for thier input? it is in there realm
& ability to do so? appears that what ever u attempt to correct is not affective.
try the IT dept super or tech.

They won't support me on linux

Unfortunately the IT guys only handle windows machines. I checked the display properties and the new monitor is running at the same resolution as the old one, so I don't think they changed anything, just unplugged the monitor and rebooted.

It looks like I'll have to try and track down an old monitor to replace the new one!
