9700 PRO on suse

I am curious if there is anyone out there that has got the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro to work on suse. I have tried to install the drivers for it for my friend a couple of times and it does not work. It just says that the card does not have 3D support. Thanks again guys.

Yeah a lot of people have gotten it to work, DO NOT USE ATI's version of the driver. SuSE had to make a few changes so that is would play nice with their kernel, at least that is my guess. See this link , and be sure to follow directions. It works. Also you will need to remove the other drivers that you installed.

I tried that actually a few times last night and evertime that we would restart the comp it would not recognize the drivers. I would go to one of the 3D games and it said that the card was not 3D supported. Any other idea's? Oh and yes it is Suse 9.1 with the newest kernel patch. Thanks again.

An important factor: what chipset is the mobo? With Nforce2, there are "special" instructions, with KT400 there are some more special instructions. Do a search on here both of these should show up quite a bit.

With that said. Here are a few troubleshooting checks:
#lsmod

Which should display all of the modules that are running, make sure that you see "fglrx" and some number associated with it. You also might need "agpgart" and some number associated with it. You don't want "radeon" on there I believe, so get rid of it with

#su
#rmmod radeon

Do
#fglrxinfo

it should display ATI blah blah, Radeon 9700 blah blah.

Do
#glxinfo | grep "Direct"

it should return
Direct Rendering Yes

It is crucial to follow the readme step by step and word for word. ATI's drivers are okay, but need some work. Can you run fgl_glxgears? If you can the drivers are loaded. What does glxgears output in terms of FPS? If it is greater than 300-400 then the drivers are loaded. These things will narrow down whether it is a particular game, or the drivers themselves. Yast/Sax will never report 3D acceleration.

Good luck and I will check back here later.
