hi. i want to be able to open *.avi in firefox. i installed mplayer plugin, removed totem plugin. i can open in firefox *wmv and *mp3 (this is wat i want), but when i try to open an *avi, ff uses Windows Media Player plugin. when i try to select another plugin for given extension, mplayer is not listed (ff -> edit -> preferences -> applications). i searched and used mplayerplug-in*.so but that didnt work. any change of associating *avi in firefox with mplayer plugin??
thanks
Open up the page "about:plugins" in Firefox and take a look at what plugins you have listed. On my system, what's called the "Windows Media Player" plugin is actually part of the mplayer plugin. I'll bet it's the same with yours, considering that there's no such thing as a Windows Media Player for Linux.
Also .avi is not a "video format" per-se. It's a container for multimedia streams. The video and audio streams inside could be just about anything, such as mpeg, wmv, x264, mp3, vorbis; and that will affect what can play the file.
The avi container is probably associated with the WMP plugin because it was developed by Microsoft.

in "aboutlugins" Windows Media Player uses mplayer plug in. the difference is that when i open mp3/wmv in ff, i see mplayer logo, loading status, control buttons. when i open avi, it become all black, no logo, no control buttons, no warning/messages. would be nice to make avi open with mplayer. but if that is not possible, at least play the avi...
