Question SuSE Wireless / Centrino

Howdy All on the New SuSE site....

I am running both 9.1 64-bit on my desktop and 9.1 32-bit on my notebook. While 9.1 does recognize some wireless devices, it still will not recognize the Centrino chip set in my notebook.

Someone said that 9.2 WILL RECOGNIZE CENTRINO wireless devices. Anyone else heard this rumor? I looked on the SuSE web site, but did not see any comments in their new features section on 9.2....

Any comments??? Many Thanks ---

Bob

I'd heard the same rumors myself... I've got 9.1 Pro up and running on my centrino lappy, and I was able to get it working using Linuxant's Driverloader and the win xp drivers. However, it took a fair amount of swearing (admittedly, I'm new at this)...

I did look into that alternative --- but I was hoping that 9.2 would make it a "civil" process :-)
I am going to give SuSE a call and ask them about that feature.
I would expect it, since the Centrino chip set is now so widely used in many portable platforms.....

Thank for the feedback. I am enjoying the SuSE distro, especially on my 64-bit box, since it is far more
stable that the Fedora Core, which I have found to be quite buggy.

I also enjoy YaST...a great tool set.

Thanks Again!!!

Centrino is an Intel catch phrase & not a chipset. Check your hardware list & find what wireless chipset is actually installed. I suspect it will be one of these Intel chips: 2100 or 2200BG. If so, the links below will help get you started.

Intel Centrino Support // 9.2

OKAY -- finally found it ....... take a gander on SuSE's page below.

http://www.suse.com/us/private/produ...wfeatures.html

Looks like 9.2 will do all the work (finally) ... it has long been my only gripe with Linux has been hardware "readiness" ------
that way, we can actually spend time putting Linux to work......and learning the system.

Thanks for all the inputs gentlemen!!!

I just got done running SuSE 9.1 YaST Online Update and there was a patch for the centrino chipset have you given that a try yet? if not check it out it may get things working relatively painlessly.

ipw2200 and ipw 2100

The patch onyou gets the ipw2100 up and running (it fetches firmware, the drivers are already there)
on the ipw2200 802.11b and g and the future ipw2915 802,11 a b and g you should go to the ipw2200.sourceforge.net page, get the firmware and the driver, place the firmware in /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and do a make make install on the driver, set up the card in yast as a wirelesscard, rename the interface before you save to ethN (N=the number that is free) and do a iwconfig to test

Centrino Install ??

Hiya Guys -- thanks again for the info.
I got on Suse Update and DOWNLOADED the "patch" --- which at the end of the download, asked for "INSTALL" which I gave it.

OK, now the "firmware" file, ipw2100-1.0.fw, is in the above noted directory for firmware....

I tried various combinations of the "make" progam, but I am not getting the right switch or command in along with it. Keeps rejecting my attempts.

Assuming I am in the right directory /usr/lib/hotplug/firware, what is the SPECFIC MAKE COMMAND structure I should be entering????

Keep in mind I have not done this before, specifically. BE VERY SPECIFIC PLEASE.

Any inputs appreciated -- Thanks --- Bob

I'm not looking at it in front of me, but I know in the readme for the driver, there's a link to the Intel site for firmware. Get the firmware from there. I've never used the downloadable firmware package from YaST. You may also want to use the latest driver from the sourceforge site, rather than the SuSE provided one.

after you hav fetched the firmware

you should check the directory /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware if the firmware is there, if not you can fetch it from the link on the ipw2100.sourceforge.net site.

If you want the latest driver, then download the driver from the same page, tar xzvf the package, make and make install it (you need gcc, make, kernelsource ++ from yast to do this), fetch the latest firmware and plase it in the firmware dir (above) tar xzvf it. then modprobe ieee80211, modprobe ipw2100, configure through suseplugger (mark the ipw2100 or similar networkcard, press configure, use the default settings, finish) then use iwconfig and ifup to start the interface.

If you do not have a intel pro wireless 2100 b centrino wlan card, you might have an intel pro wireless 2200 bg centrino wlan card. (or even an ipw2915, the same thing applies to that one) If this is the case then go to ipw2200.sourceforge.net (also aplies to the ipw2915), fetch the driver and firmware, repeat above instructions and configure your wlan device through suseplugger( configure it as a wirelesscard without a driver, rename the interface to eth0 or eth1 (do iwconfig to see which one it is assigned to) then use iwconfig and ifup to start and configure it.)

Good luck
