Well, Kontact will still be open and taking up RAM, but you can make the Window disappear on command.
Settings -> Configure KMail
Click Appearance Icon, select System Tray Tab
Check Enable System Tray Icon and 'Always show in System Tray'.
Now, clicking on the resulting system tray icon will hide/reveal Kontact. You can also initiate a manual mail check, and open a new email for editing, by right clicking the icon.
