Does XFCE 4.2 Mail Checker work w/ Thunderbird local folders?

Is there a way to have the XFCE 4.2 mail checker work with a Thunderbird "local folder"? I've done some searching on this and have come up empty. Currently I have the "mailbox" option in my Mail Checker settings set to the same folder as Thunderbird points to, but I don't get the color change when I get a new email, and I really have no idea if the mail checker is even doing anything. It DOES start Thunderbird when I click on it, however...

(P.S. I only put this in this forum because I'm running XFCE 4.2 under Slackware 10.1...)

In XFCE 4.2, there's a utility in the panel called "Mail Checker" - it looks like an envelope:
