solaris 10 freeload edition, using gnome
i downloaded the wheelmouse drive tar.bz2, and it won't pkgadd. no such app. ok.
now what? no xorg just xsun, so no copy alternative.
solaris forums led the dance the same way....
not critical, but i would like to spin the wheel and not gripe.

Rep:
Are you using Solaris 10 01/05 or a Solaris Express release ?
Where does this wheelmouse driver come from ?
Is this a PS/2 mouse or an USB ?
It seems USB wheelmouses (wheelmice?) work just fine, but PS/2 don't.
What do you mean by

? You don't want to run Xsun ? or Xorg ? or the driver doesn't install on one of these, or what ?
this particular os only installs xsun. standard IMPS/2 infrared wheel mouse, the one that works under the xorg.config line "ZAxisMapping" "4 5".
i'm using the solaris 10 (5.10) five-disc iso download edition. it seems uncompress is the only package utility in it, and there is no compilers, make, pmake, or anything that i can locate. of course i'm stumbling around between google, sun's site, and my limited linux experience here ;]
it's only my second day with solaris, but i'm impressed by what i've seen so far. nearly everything works "out of the box", and tweaking what doesn't isn't a major nightmare.
If you are installing on x86/x64 hardware, Solaris 10 is asking you which one of Xsun or Xorg you want to run.

make is part of Solaris (/usr/ccs/bin/make), for the rest, go to http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware/ and download the solaris companion freeware CD image, containing tons of freewares. Alternatively, you can also have a look at sunfreeware.com or blastware.org.
awesome. thanks a bunch!
i got the TOOLS driver installed, which led me by the hand to the old xorg.conf setup.
i also installed the opensound.com ich4/x86 collection. the more i see of this OS the more i like what i got! it seems as well, that there is a huge number of sites/enthusiasts out there that run solaris, so there appears to be no end to the availability of help. no wonder this distro doesn't have many strings!
again: thank you.
