They aren't mandatory for Xen to be used but in that case, the virtualized O/S kernel must be modified to be Xen aware.
This rules out closed source O/Ses like Windows.

Well, I succeeded to take Windows out of my life (it was very easy to do it)... Now I only depends on linux to reproduce multimedia content.

Only the CrossOver Server Edition works on Solaris...
