i have searched high and low for solaris source code. apparently sun was freely distributing solaris 8, but that is no longer happening. i was hoping i could find it lying around on someones ftp or something, but i have had no luck. i keep calling SUN, and every idiot i talk to tells me that i need a customer ID number to talk to anyone w/ any technical knowledge. they direct me to the sun forums, where i post and post and post and receive no answers to my question. this is driving me mad.. i want to learn to write drivers on solaris, but i want the kernel source before i begin that. does anyone have anything that can help me???????????? and NO, im not going to pay for it on sun's site :P

Hi Sun does not distribute any source code ! as far as I know. And in order to get support you have to pay large amounts of money for a support contract ! You can download Solaris 8 for intel I think for free (well i think you still have to pay for postage and packaging). I've no idea when it comes to writting code so I can't really be much help. you could there help system and look though some white pappes etc www.sunsolve.sun.com.

Actually, Sun distributes its O/S source code for a fee ($100 for non profit educational orgs) but the license doesn't allows redistribution, and don't even allow the code to be installed on a networked server, so don't expect licensees to take the risk of leaking the code.
There are also a profit (commercial) source code license, which is certainly far more expensive, Fujitsu is an example of such customer.
OTOH, I don't think having the source code is necessary to write Solaris drivers. You'll find plenty of documentation, resource and sample code on the Sun site and others.
A last comment, if you happen to develop a driver for Solaris and want to distribute it, you'd better release it under BSD license (or the like) and not GPL, because GPL and Solaris license are mutually exclusive.
thanks for the info guys. this really pisses me off... i know u can write drivers w/o the OS code, but it just isn't the same. i mean, half of the time i've been learning how to write linux drivers has been spent seeing how different parts of the kernel are implemented. imho, it just takes away from the experience without the code. im going to learn how freebsd drivers work instead, until sun gets w/ the program at least.
