Newbie To Solaris

Hi all.

I've been a general Linux user and recent convert to Debian on that side. In intrests of taking advantage of my knowledge in the Debian marketplace, I almost invariably see jobs listed as having Debian/Solaris skills in nearly every case.

So I figured it may be time to learn what makes Solaris so different from other *NIXes and ultimately tried to download it onto my Windows box at home.

The preferred method that Sun recommends is their "SDM" or "Sun Download Manager". But when I try to download Solaris by double-clicking the SDM shortcut, CodeWarrior opens in response and issuing an error.

So if there is anyone out there knowledgable enough about Windows who could help me through what should be a simple and automated process that would be great. Or if you could help me find the straight ISOs that I could download directly, that would also be great. For some reason I just can't seem to find the ISOs.

And lastly if anyone out there has any wisdom to offer as to why Solaris is so often recommended in tandem with Debian, that would be great! I honestly don't know what sets it so apart from the varied Linux distros.

Thanks!

SDM is not mandatory, you can directly download the Solaris ISOs, I recommend downloading Solaris Express (currently build 28) if you want to evaluate latest enhancements, like ZFS and BrandZ.

I don't understand the relationship with code warrior, is it something you have installed on your PC ?

Thanks, I'll go a-huntin' some more for the Solaris ISOs. I tried to find them previously but didn't see them. I'll look again. It's good to know that the ISOs are freely available without SDM.

In case you weren't aware, CodeWarrior is a C/C++/Objective C/Java development envirnoment I have installed on my PC and my mac. My Mac doesn't have a burner attached to it, so I tried it on my PC. But apparently the Windows resources associate SDM with codewarrior instead of running the app.

At any rate, thanks for the heads-up, and I will keep looking for those ISOs!

SDM is just a Java utility that ease downloading big files through http or ftp, and provide pause/resume functionality.

I still do not understand why codewarrior is choking on SDM.

What is the error message ? What JRE/JDK are you using ?
