Hello Everyone.
I have just got solaris 8 two cd set from friend. I am very much new to solaris though i know linux littlebit.
I tried to install solaris by reading about the installtion procedure thru book but it failed i dont know where i went wrong. The installation was successfull, after rebooting the system the screen goes blank after starting the print services.. etc. The boot loader gets installed properly.
Secondly the setup doent asks for a second cd. Is there any problem.
I tried to install on the other machine too but same problem.
Configuration of first machine is as follows
PIII 500 MHz
128 MB SD RAM
10 GB Seagate HDD
Intel 810 Motherboard with onboard graphics & sound (Crystal AC97)
Dlink Ethernet card
Configuration of second machine is as follows
IBM PC 300 GL
PIII 550 MHz
128 MB SD RAM
20 GB HDD
Diamond Stealth III S520 Video
Ess Allegro Sound card
3com Etherlink Ethernet card
The second CD is only necessary if you are doing more than "end-user" installation (i.e. Entire Distro). Have you checked the HCL to see if the video cards are compatible? There are some additional drivers (XFree86 video drivers below) that you can download if not.
Thanx 4 ur reply. I was desperately waiting for it.
I will tell u the few things i chose during installation.
- Entire Distibution (What is the diff between entire Distro and End user system? Which would be better for a beginer?) Still it didnt ask me for second CD.
- Video : The standard drivers, not for any specified card (Sorry i dont remember the name now but it is the second one in the list.)
- Monito SVGA
During the test it worked fine. It showed me the display. I did the installation in graphical mode.
The system boots fine in solaris but after the line "Starting web launcher" there is no display.
What could b the reason?
Please help...
Regards
Vishal
"Starting web launcher" is the portion that installs the second CD. I have had nothing but problems with it on x86 with an unsupported video driver. I prefer to use the text installation through a serial port, but that is just my prefs.
I would say to boot single user, then install the XFree86 video porting kit from Sun, then boot again to single user mode and run kdmconfig to configure the XFree86 drivers. Now reboot and your web launcher should be able to run. It will prompt you for the second disk then.
Is it possible for u to explain me how do i log to solaris in single user mode as i am newbie and install the kit. On the link provided by u it is mentioned that intel 810 drivers are supported by solaris 8 and the porting kit is not supporting intel 810 drivers. What should i do?
I show that both claim support for I810 video cards. If you have successfully run a Linux GUI on your system then the XFree86 video porting kit will work for you. As to why Sun claims support and yet your system does not work in GUI, I would venture to guess it is probably patch related. If you can get the latest (2/02?) version of Solaris 8 x86 or Solaris 9 x86, then it would probably help. If you cannot, then I would say to download the latest recommended and security patch bundle from Sun and install that. You will still need to finish the second CD before you can do that though. I will try to get back to you soon with the steps to get past the second CD. I don't have a Solaris x86 box near me tonight.
Come to think of it, I think I remember having problems with an I810 driver issue that was solved with a patch from Sun. You may want to search their sunsolve patch site for "i810 x86 sunos5.8".
Nevermind, I just did the search for you and turned up patch 109401-14. Run the following command and post the results.
Code:
showrev -p | grep 109401
If you have less than -14 (i.e. 109401-07) or the previous command returns nothing, then this patch should be your key.
Hello nuttyvishal4u,
Another Solaris noob here. Just got Solaris 9 installed with help from this site: http://solaris-x86.org/documents/tutorials/
Maybe there is something useful for you there.
Good Luck.
I have seen that link but dont know where and how will get it for free. It asks for 20$ of whatever.
There is no other place from where i can download it for free
not anymore, that free download thing was for Solaris 8 and was supposed to end a long time ago. But they (Sun) extended it for sometime. Then when they finally released 9, they were charging $20 a pop for download.
