"--version" is specific to the Gnu version of sed.

There is no specific versioning for commands that belongs to core Solaris, like sed.

You can run
Code:
mcs -p /usr/bin/sed
pkginfo -l SUNWcsu
to see it.

Why do you want to know its version ?

For this statement " "--version" is specific to the Gnu version of sed.", does it mean that
1. we can see the sed version only on non solaris unix machines?
2. we cant have multiple versions of sed on a single solaris machine.
3. What does GNU version means?

The following is the ouptout for mcs and pkginfo command.

bash-2.05$ /usr/ccs/bin/mcs -p /usr/bin/sed
/usr/bin/sed:

@(#)SunOS 5.9 Generic 114004-01 Dec 2002

No, I believe AIX, HP/UX, older Unixes and perhaps *BSD do not have this option neither.

Sure, you can install gnu sed on Solaris.
Actually all Gnu utilities can be installed on Solaris, and several are by default (but not gnu-sed).

3. What does GNU version means?
The version the gnu developer want to give to that specific release of gnu sed.
As it is an independant product, this is needed to track evolutions, bugs, patches and so on.
Solaris sed does need a specific version, as it is bundled with the base O/S.

Your sed has this version: 11.9.0,REV=2002.04.06.15.27
