For this statement " "--version" is specific to the Gnu version of sed.", does it mean that
1. we can see the sed version only on non solaris unix machines?
2. we cant have multiple versions of sed on a single solaris machine.
3. What does GNU version means?

No, I believe AIX, HP/UX, older Unixes and perhaps *BSD do not have this option neither.

Sure, you can install gnu sed on Solaris.
Actually all Gnu utilities can be installed on Solaris, and several are by default (but not gnu-sed).

As it is an independant product, this is needed to track evolutions, bugs, patches and so on.
Solaris sed does need a specific version, as it is bundled with the base O/S.
