Well, I *would* install the libc patch, which should solve the problem. Unfortunately, the libc patch requires that the kernel patch be installed first. That particular kernel patch *did* go fine on my test box, however my googling of the web and searching of various Sun support forums (fori?) results in too many instances of that kernel patch making systems non-bootable or otherwise inoperable.

According to Sun, that kernel patch would also most likely solve my intermittant crash during boot issue, so it would be nice to have it. I'd be able to do my reboots overnight without having to wake up extra early to see if the machine was up before the work day starts.

The problem is that the risk is quite high on that patch. It's not just like loading a new version of SMC or Java, this is something that can take a system down hard if things don't go exactly right.

In the case of my user adding, I should be able to back out either some SMC or user command patches (if I can figure out which ones broke the commands) to achieve the desired result without putting the system at risk of being destroyed by the kernel patch. And of course, if the patches weren't so buggy in the first place, I wouldn't have this problem!
