You may try the new Acrobat Reader 7.0
http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

It's closed-source but there is a version for Solaris.
It seems to work better than the other readers in some cases (at least in my linux).

This is indeed a problem with "ligatured" f and i, your pdf document has only one character for this for some reason, and the font used by gpdf is missing it.

There is unfortunately no recent version of acrobat reader for Solaris on x86, only a SPARC version is available, as maidros suggested, try xpdf to see if it converts the ligature properly.

Another option would be to use gv, but it makes the whole pdf file look rather ugly. But it works, even for type 3 fonts.
