Smile Wifi

Hello, I recently installed Slackware for the first time. Although I've managed to solve some of my own problems though online resources, I cannot figure out what is wrong with the wifi. When I type iw config I get eth0 and lo has no wireless extensions. I confused what to do from here. I believe I'm suppose to load some sort of module but I'm not entirely sure what.

Please tell me if you need any information before recommending a solution.

Hi,

Welcome to LQ!

You can use http://docs.slackware.com/start section;
Quote:
Configure your new Slackware System; how to proceed after the installation has completed.
Problem could be that you still need firmware for your wireless device. You can use from the cli, 'lspci -vv' to get the device. Hopefully you will only need to insure that firmware is the issue. Other wise it could be a configuration problem. What does 'ifconfig -a' from the cli show?
Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

Thank you for the help. Here is what ifconfig -a outputs:

eth0: flag=4098<BROADCAST,MULTICAST. mtu 1500
ether 34:e6:d7:46:1b:81 txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 ovverruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

lo: flags=73<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING> mtu 65536
inet 27.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0
inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 scopeid 0x10<host>
loop txqueuelen 0 (Local Loopback)
RX packets 528 bytes 44252 (43.2 KiB)
RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0
TX packets 528 bytes 44252 (43.2 KiB)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

Also from lspci -vv I found the Network controller:

01:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications Inc. Device 003e (rev 20)
Subsystem: Bigfoot Networks, Inc. Device 1525

May I also add is that I cannot get connected to the internet through wifi or through an Ethernet cable.

Hi,

You can use http://docs.slackware.com/slackware:beginners_guide network section to configure your network device(s). Plus the section wireless configuration guide should be helpful.
Which Slackware version are you using? What do you see from cli for 'dmesg |grep -i wireless' without tics.

Hope this helps.
Have fun & enjoy!

Is your wireless device the "Atheros Qualcomm Killer N1525 Wireless-AC [168c:003e]" ? According to this page, it is supported since kernel version 4.0: http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/WLAN.html
Code:
lkddb pci 168c 003e .... .... ...... : CONFIG_ATH10K CONFIG_ATH10K_PCI CONFIG_ATH_CARDS CONFIG_WLAN : drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath10k/pci.c # in 4.0–4.1, 4.2-rc+HEAD
Slackware still only has a 3.x kernel where this wireless device is not supported.
Slackware-current has a configuration file in case you want to compile your own 4.1.1 kernel: http://taper.alienbase.nl/mirrors/sl...testing-4.1.1/

It's not especially hard to compile a kernel. Just follow this guide, and it should work fine.
