User permissions with sound devices.

Running Slackware 11, the sound configured with ALSA, giving me system sounds in a user account.

If I try to play a cd with KsCD in my own account I get an error message questioning if I the necessary permission for /dev/cdrom and the CD won't play. In root the CD will play.

I have changed some /dev permissions eg scd0 to no effect, lost my notes since the last time I configured sound in Slackware and the device names have changed? Also done chmod a+x on /dev/hdc to no avail. May also be a symbolic link to set?

If any one out there can put me out of my misery I will be delighted.

Check, if your user account is in cdrom group (file /etc/group should have a line cdrom::<some number>:<your user>).

Thanks for the reply and it's now getting there. I added my user name as you suggest and KsCD starts without fault now, recognises the CD and plays it but there is still no sound.

Same with RealPlayer, that does everything with the exception of producing sound.

I have checked the mixer settings and re-enabled the CD with negative result.

System sounds work, so does that irritating bugle call after a successful CD burn with k3b.

I keep copious notes but the one thing I have mislaid is how I did it in the past, never had to add to the group file before and from memory I altered the permissions on about three /dev files and put a link in.

Thanks again, I just need a little more help and I am sure it will be up and running.

Did you add yourself to the audio group? I normally add myself to the audio, video, cdrom, disk, floppy, scanner and uucp (if I am using my old serial palm device) when I create my user account in Slackware.

Yes I have done that and still have no sound from the CD although it appears to work as normal.

I have only encountered this problem with more recent versions of Slackware, got around it before by changing /dev permissions. I created my user account with adduser in a console?

Thanks for the reply.

Success, I followed the above advice using the KDE control centre, and I now have sound from the CD. My problem is being stuck in the past and doing everything in a console, I must reform my ways ;-) Thanks for the help guys.

Maybe this will help somebody if their mouse wheel doesn't work, a line in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" does the trick.

Regards
Graham

Slackware went a week ago and I am back on SimplyMepis after trying one or two more so have had to rack my brains and the answer is in the above post.

If you go into the KDE Control Centre>System Administration>login manager and add the devices to the group the cdrom produces sound. Try as I might I still could not get RealPlayer to produce sound and I gave up.

Ever had the printer problem, configure the printer, test it and it works fine, download a pdf file and try and print it and get reams of rubbish and the printer throws multiple sheets out? Made me scratch me head a bit, the answer is simmple, in the KDE control centre make sure the printer configured is the default. Because I was running Slackware before KDE I have always configured in a console, apsfilter for the printer, it's all a lot easier in KDE control centre.

I think one clue is, K3b plays that irritating bugle call, when set up it gets root permissions. I said earlier I have always used chmod on devices eg/dev/cdrom etc to get the thing working but since around slackware 8.1 it hasn't done the trick. I bet the answer is there in the HOWTOS somewhere?
