Hi folks. I'm still having problems with permissions. I've got the one Debian install working ok, which is Woody upgraded to Sarge, and still on testing repo and going into Etch territory. I've got the permissions ok on this for using sounds as user, but can't remember what I did.Lol. I've just upgraded another Woody install to Sarge. This one I'm gonna keep on the stable repo, but can't get user access to the sounds. If I log in to KDE as root everything works ok, so theres nothing wrong with the apps. I've tried useradd user_name audio, and useradd user_name sound, but no go. /etc/group shows an entry for my user name, for audio, but none for sound. I'm using the 2.4.27 kernel with Alsa 1.08 and 2.6.8 kernel with Alsa 1.04 which I'll make a quick trip to the testing repo to upgrade it to the 2.6.11 kernel soon, as it has Alsa 1.08. As important as permissions are, I'm finding them a bit of a nightmare to work with. Any help appreciated to get sounds working as user. Nigel. aka farpoint.
Hi uberNUT69. Thanks for the help. The usermod command has fixed it. One last academic question. When I log-in as root the KDE test sound plays, but no test sound when logging in as user. On Slackware 10.0 before I installed the Ausioslack kernel with Alsa support, the KDE test sound worked when logging in as user or root. After installing the AS kernel and alsa, the test sound only plays when logging in as root. Just out of interest I'd like to know where permissions need to be set for the KDE test sound, as no doubt this affects other system sounds as well.
Although it would appear to make sense to login to an X session using root for debugging purposes, I would strongly recommend that you DON'T! Various files will earn root ownership that will not be removed, and from then on your user(s) may not be able to access those files.
I bring this up as it's possible that there is something in your home directory owned by root. You can find these files with:
$ls -laLR | grep root
I'm pretty sure there is no exception to the rule that everything in your home directory should be owned by your user (and the group that user belongs to). Change your ownership with:
#chown user:group filename
Back to the issue at hand. You say sound is working, but not kde system sounds ... hmmm ... so you can play, say, an audio file in xmms or noatun? If you go into your control centre and try to set system sounds does pressing the 'test' button work?
I'm not sure I've given you an answer, but somewhere to start at least
Hi, Thanks for the reply, and the warning about logging into X as root. As long as the Arts soundserver is started, Noatun,XMMS, etc play ok. Jack starts ok, and I can play along to tunes playing with Noatun with Zynaddsubfx running thro Alsa and Qjackctl's midi connect bay. So basically there's nothing wrong with the system for the audio work I want to do. The test sound plays ok, but just doesn't autoplay when KDE opens as user. All files and directories are for user in /home, so no problems there. As I said, I'm not really bothered about system notification sounds not working, in fact it is much more relaxing than when I used to use Windoze, with continual plinks, plunks and all sorts of other sounds at every wrong press of a key. I'll have a good read at the help pages for system notification settings as it would be nice to get some sounds out of Kopete. Thanks again for the help. Nigel. aka farpoint.
