hi all,
i've installed xfce but don't know how to start it. i had selected the default window manager to be kde so when i say 'startx', kde starts. i tried changing it using the 'pkgtool' but it doesn't work. i tried starting 'kdm' and selecting a different window manager but 'xfce' is not listed there. i'm very sure that it installed well.
thanks in advance for the help
The way I do it (if you're starting X with 'startx', instead of a graphical login screen) is to edit my ~/.xinitrc file (in my home directory) to include the line:
exec startxfce4
(if you don't have xfce4, I think it may be called 'xfwm'). I think you may also be able to just run 'startxfce4' from the console; haven't tried it.
thanks for that,
i was able to start xfce with 'startxfce4' but after it starts it shows up a dialog box saying that something has crashed and the box doesn't go away. i had installed 'xfce' from the package at 'linuxpackages.net'. is there anything wrong with that package?

To tell you the truth, I've had awful experiences with packages off the www.linuxpackages.net site. Most are submitted by people and not the actual slackware peeps who make the packages correctly it seems at times.
If you want to change desktops or window managers
use the command xwmconfig. Xfce that comes from
Slackware needs the startup-notification package
which can be found in the gnome directory.
