slackware "current" problems after install on vmware

I haven't used slackware for many years (the last time I used it I had a handfull of floppies I made after downloading with my 2.8k modem)
I just downloaded the current tree 7/2/2007 and followed the instructions to build an ISO. Then I installed from the ISO to vmware machine. all went smooth with no installation problems, I just choose to install the whole enchilada.
My first clue that something was amiss was during setup, when asked to choose a window manager I kinda expected to see kde as a choice, but it wasn't there, so I just picked xfce and went on. when all was finished I rebooted and logged in as root then typed startx but was surprised to get a "startx command not found" error. so I tried to reconfigure with xorgsetup which all seemed to go good, but afterwards, once again I got the same startx not found. at this point I remembered not seeing kde as an option and thought I would just rerun setup and see if I missed something. When I type "setup" I get a "setup not found" error, maybe this is normal after initial setup?
I looked in the log files and under the package dir. and see several "x" entries as well as several "kde" entries but I'm really not sure of the exact packages I should be looking for to see if they are installed.
Also I bothers me that if I have found these problems, what other packages are missing?
I did try "which startx" but of course it came back as not found. Where should startx be? how do I check if all the packages were installed? If some of the packages didn't get installed how do I install them at this point?

Thanks

that's certanly strange.

you can check whether a package is installed by looking at /var/log/packaages.
did you select the kde/ series in the installer?

anyway, you can install packages with 'installpkg bla.tgz'

You might want to have a look to the 'manual' i've made , it explains step by step howto install slackware12.0 into vmware, you have the link below. I know the pictures are too small but i'm working to improve that. Let me know if you find it useful.
