Have you created a normal user account? If not, do this first with the "adduser" command. Then log out and log back in as the new user and run "startx". If you want a graphical login, rather than having to run startx every time you log in, then you'll want to change your default run level to level 4. This can be done by editing the /etc/inittab file as root, with any text editor and changing the line "id:3:initdefault:". You need to change the 3 to a 4.
