Question Minimum required X series install

I know you guys probably get a lot of these questions but I promise you I have searched before posting.

I'm trying to install a very basic Slackware system from which to build on.

So far I've got everything I need but I'm stuck on the X series. Can someone please point me in the right direction to find out the minimum amount of packages required to install X.

Thanks

Have you checked out slackbook?

It has a whole section on getting X up and running on Slackware.

Thanks for your reply but that was one of the first places I searched.

I don't really have any problems with configuring X, I just want to slim out the bloat by only installing the bare minimum (libs, utils, fonts, drivers etc)!

Hi,

For a 'minimum system' is a good example. For the 'X' I would suggest that you look at some of the small footprint LiveCDs distributions that use 'X'.

Check out Ratpoison for a minimalist window manager. Out of the box you'll wonder what's good for - you have to configure it yourself - so download some configurations from otther ratpoison users. Google on "ratpoisonrc".

It doesn't require any libraries other than those you've already got. It uses the small X utilities which so many of us didn't know that we had on our system. It's so small that you can compile it in minutes.

So keep all the X stock programs and throw out all the window managers (kde etc.). and you really will have the minimal X install - yet one far more powerful than the glamorous big window managers.
