Apologies for not replying sooner - I've got family staying over the Easter week-end, which is keeping me away from the keyboard!

I did manage to apply the latest updates yesterday, and the performance has improved. 720 videos now play smoothly with around 60% on all cpus (20% on slarm64, for comparison). 1080 videos also play, but very stuttery - they didn't play at all previously.

I haven't had chance to check if all mralk3's suggested fixes have been included in the latest updates. That will have to wait until the family have departed, I'm afraid. I'm also using a version of VLC that was compiled under slarm64 as I have yet to succeed in compiling it under slackwareaarch64! This means it is probably sub-optimal!

There is a rather out-of-date instruction on building VLC with hardware acceleration here: https://thepi.io/how-to-compile-vlc-...-raspberry-pi/

Obviously this needs tweaking for current hardware! There are a lot of configure options that either no longer exist in the 64-bit world, or are for older processors. Food for thought, though!

I've seen it suggested for Kodi to add the following to config.txt:

Code:
dtoverlay=rpivid-v4l2
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-512
Haven't tried this yet, for reasons already mentioned!

Onwards and upwards...!

You can use alienBOB's Slackbuild script to build vlc on Aarch64. My package is unavailable because it was built on -current. It may become broken or unreliable in the future.

I have only tested it on my RockPro64. I built it with:

Code:
USE_PATENTS=NO sh vlc.SlackBuild
Make sure you set --target to the correct value. Some of the internal libraries need autoreconf ran before configure is ran. It built in less than an hour.
