xorgconfig with a laptop

Hello everybody.
I am having serious difficulties with xorgconfig. I have an older COMPAQ Armada E500 laptop with a 14.1 TFT display and an ATI RAGE Mobility card. I've been searching everywhere and I found a really great site specifically about the E500 and installing RedHat 7.x. In fact, there's even a tar'd copy of the guys XFree86 config file and a brief info section about hardware specs, etc.
Supposedly the Horizontal sync is 31.5-48.5 1024x768 @ 60kHz with a Vertical of 50-100Hz. I've tried every possible configuration using xorgconfig, and I can't get anything to work. Every time I try startx, it ends with the "no screens found" error. And actually under a couple different configs, it will detect the screen and then spit out an error that device vga0 does not support 24 bit. And then I get the "no screens found" error. I even tried running 16bit with the same configs that detected the screen and I get a different error saying that 16bit is not supported by the driver (or something similar--I don't remember exactly.) I looked through the guy's XFree86 config file and he has everything set up just the way I was trying it. I know he was using XFree86 version 3.something, but the settings are all I really wanted to know--I mean jeez, it's the exact same computer. Does anyone here have any experience with configuring Xorg for laptops? It's a pretty standard display, so it shouldn't be this problematic. If anyone can steer me in the right direction, I would realllly appreciate it.

You may run xorgsetup
These program could autoconfigure your display.

Wow, thanks kohokuak. I had no idea there was an automatic X config utility. That would have saved me a ton of headaches. I probably ran xorgconfig 50 times in a row with no success. One time running xorgsetup, and everything works! Thanks again.

"X -configure" will create a workable config file however, the problem I have on my Compaq Armada 4110 is that there is a one inch band around the perimeter of the screen and it doesn't allow the screen to be used from edge to edge.
