XOAUTH2 with Alpine on slack142

i still use slack142 on my main machine with Alpine 2.20 - but for a bunch of work mail servers i need 2FA XOAUTH2 (2-factor authentication) which requires an upgrade to Alpine 2.22 or even better 2.24.2.

- i thought about simply upgrading Alpine with the newest version from -Current - will that work for slack142 ?

- or will compiling the Alpine 2.24.2 source code do it, on this old slack142 VPS ? any dependency war to expect ?

i am a bit uneasy about fiddling with email related software as i access with my Alpine setup 4 different mail services i depend on - and i simply can't break things here.

evidently a full upgrade to slack15 will solve all this but we are not there yet... i suppose, at some point, when it's ready

You Should have no problem building and updating it on 14.2 I just built it and ran it in 14.2
Use Pat's build from current.
I have ran in to this issue with needing certain stuff from current for certain private projects.
I do have a customized slackware 14.2.
But I built alpine on a stock build of 14.2. you should have no issue upgrading it if you compile it.

thank you, lovemeslk, for encouraging - so i went actually with the alpha version 2.24.2, compiled it, and it seems to work fine. i have at times even two alpines running at the time, v2.20 and this new v2.24.2, but just for testing while setting up XOAUTH2 and 2FA with the latter. i will report about success once things are in place...

here some feedback about using the newest alpine version 2.24.2 on my old Slack142 VPS in the context of XOAUTH2 Modern Authentication : things work just right, quite unbelievable. i am using now 4 email services in alpine : gmail and then two academic ones with Outlook/XOAUTH2, and a last one with Basic Authentication. everything works as it should, neatly updating when new messages arrive and so on.

just make sure you compile alpine 2.24.2 with password file access :

Code:
./configure --with-passfile=.pine.pwd
make
touch ~/.pine.pwd
/$NewAlpinePath/alpine/alpine -p ~/.pinerc_20210718
~/.pinerc_20210718 is my special pinerc file but i will soon moved it into the default ~/.pinerc.
that's it. a huge thank-you goes to Eduardo Chappa, the maintainer of alpine who crucially helped me with this upgrade !
marking this as solved.
