But can it play DVD's or audio cd's?

What I'm trying to ascertain is, whether or not there's a symlink between the device and the mount point?

You might try the following...

as root

ln -s /dev/hdX /mnt/cdrom

Where X is replaced with appropriate letter.

Before Xine will play, you must install libdvdcss and libdvdread, as well as a symlink.

Might also need to change the permissions of cdrom drive.

Do you have the vcd plugin ? From your previous post it's not in the list <xine --list-plugins>
In my system it's in /usr/lib/xine/plugins/1.0.1/xineplug_inp_vcd.so
I think the slackware install should have done this by default, but maybe it didn't for some reason ?
Also, about that test available at http://xinehq.de/index.php/faq#VCDSUPPORT . The only way to make that play on my system < xine vcd:///$HOME/test_svcd_pal.cue@E0 > . Maybe your system is the same ?

EDIT/ I think your version of xine-lib will be newer than 1.0.1 and won't have xineplug_inp_vcd.so.
I guess it deals with vcd's in some different way. It seems 1.0.1 has some security issues.

Did you change the permissions of /mnt/cdrom ?

Try chmod-ing it to 777.

Do this again but thsi time make sure you first do a
Code:
 cd /
and make sure you leave the space between hdd and /mnt

I hope to not disturb this thread but... why do you want the mount point to be a symlink to the device node? That's wrong.
A posible needed symlink would be /dev/cdrom to point to /dev/hdd

Well, I've never watched a VCD, but afaik they used MPEG compression. Try moving the codecs to another directory and test the VCD without them.
