Some of the major distros are staying with XFree 4.3 due to a change in licensing that will be effective with the release of 4.4.

I am not exactly sure what the changes involve although the xfree web site indicates it just gives credit "where credit is due".

Since Pat V. has always credited developers of software he may be able to bring out 4.4 without the issues that RedHat, SuSe or Mandrake would have.

For the individual it is also not hard to do a Slackware install without the x/ package series and then get the appropriate xfree86 bianaries and run the Xinstall.sh shellscript.

I personally am looking forward to 4.4 as it provides 3-D acceleration for an SiS Based Desknote that I have.
