Hello all I think I got slackware 10.1 installed correctly this time around, thanks to all who helped.
Anyway my question is I choose fluxbox as windows manager, when I type fluxbow I get an error saying could not oped an x11 file. I also get an error telling me "can not connect to X server" and make sure you start X before you start fluxbox. Any help would be great, thank you.
hmm, the command to start the X server is
$ startx
fluxbox should already be configured as your window manager if you chose it during the setup.
You will need to run xorgconfig to configure settings for your monitor/video card/mouse etc and to generate a config file for X prior to starting X.
Cheers
Ok I have been fooling around with xorgconfig for an hour and I keep getting the same error, that keeps telling me that no screen is found. I went to the X11 website and it basically states that either my card is not supported (Trident Cyberblade) or I might have to use a different driver. Any help on this would be great, thank you.
I think I tried that once, but as of now I sort of have a working GUI in that fluxbox only uses half the screen while the other is black plus the top half (which works sort of) is basically splt into 3 screens. So again I ask any help on this would be great. Thanks
I have tried a different command this time around. I ran X -configure . Now when I X - configure script to start X I get a mouse pointer that moves all around but I still have a black screen. OBTW what config files do I have to go into to change some of the settings for monitor so I will not get a black screen. Thank You
I don't think editing xorg.conf will make much difference unless you know what the problems are. Examine the log file for X for any clues - /var/log/X.org.0.log. Check around for Linux drivers for your card too. Use one which isn't quite right and you're sure to run into a wall full of problems.
I've also experienced those things on my box, and the problem is that my monitor could'nt handle high graphics. I don't know how to do this in xorg, but try configuring your resolution to a much lower one, I've got mine a depth of 24, with a 800x600 mode. Are you experiencing it also in console mode??
My console is ok but when I start X thats when I get my problems. I think I have to back into the xorg file again. Any tips on laptops for X would be great. Thanks everyone.
There are two sites on the internet where users post their experience with laptops, which are categorized by manufacturer and model. I don't have them bookmarked on this computer, but using Google <Linux> will be a good exercise for you. Alternately, they might be in the new Social Bookmarks here at LQ. They are:
