X-Chat issue

I'm sort of an IRC noob, but I can't seem to connect to any servers using X-Chat! I keep getting:

USER :not enough parameters

Not sure if this is really a slackware issue, but I've had good luck with these forums before. If anyone has any info about a possible fix, I'd be grateful. Thanks in advance!

It is hard to guess without any relevant information, except the err message

Please post all the messages that were seen in the status window, from a failed connect scenario

Is it the very first attempt with X-Chat? Have you tried any other irc client like irssi or Mozilla's ChatZilla?
