Yeah, like I say, it's not going to catch everything - it has lists of apps it knows to look for and you'll need to edit the generated menu for the rest. You may find it easier to just edit the script and drop in the names of the apps you want so that it'll generate the rest.

Well, Successfully made the transition from Xfce (long time favourite) to fluxbox. Am using the SLim login manager..

Used fluxconf to configure the menu and gui. made some modded themes. Just loving the freedom that i get with fluxbox.

I've always used KDE, but not any more

I can't stand KDE4 it looks and (acts) too much like winblows. XFCE for me.

Can a couple of the kind readers of this thread show the output of some environmental variables for me by running this command:
'set |egrep 'DESKTOP|KDE|GNOME|XFCE'

There is some environmental variable used to (supposedly) identify which desktop environment is being used -and I can't remember what it is :-(
Please don't make me install any one of those desktops just to find out!

Same here (with KDE 4.3.1):
Code:
bash-3.1$ set | egrep 'DESKTOP|KDE|GNOME|XFCE'
DESKTOP_SESSION=kde
DESKTOP_STARTUP_ID=
KDEDIRS=/usr
KDE_FULL_SESSION=true
KDE_MULTIHEAD=false
KDE_SESSION_UID=1000
KDE_SESSION_VERSION=4
And, logging out and in to XFCE:
Code:
bash-3.1$ set | egrep 'DESKTOP|KDE|GNOME|XFCE'
DESKTOP_SESSION=xfce4
KDEDIRS=/usr

Ok, I specified XFCE, but then I found Alien Bob's LXDE slackbuilds, and they're working great (Thanks Alien!). Actually lxde is all I have left on this system, beside TWM (for emergencies). Didn't install KDE to start with, XFCE is gone, and Gnome is great, but a bloody nuisance to set up so that it works perfectly.

So one vote for LXDE

That's exactly how i feel. I hate being reminded of Windows when i am in Linux. i like my desktop to be clean and clutter free and above all functional.. fluxbox fulfills all those needs.

Thanks mcnalu and brianL, DESKTOP_SESSION was what I had in mind, but even that is a bit iffy. I guess KDE_SESSION_UID is more dependable in that case.

Any GNOME users out there?

I prefer Xfce

The thing is that since I do not want anything that would have my memory for breakfast I prefer xfce. Maybe this is because I like to have the menu on a right click

I use fluxbox since the old days.

Gave others try sometimes. Seems like KDE4 is promising. But my flux works good as always.

Yes. On my main machine that has some system resources I like xfce, the machine is nice and snappy. On my secondary machine (slower AMD 900 MHz) Fluxbox does the job for me. Fluxbox has the menu on right-click as well.
I'm considering moving to Fluxbox on my main machine as it is so blazingly fast. My wife and daughter like XFce on their machines.
