Answering my own question, here
What I found is this: I had to go to /etc/passwd and, after I'd added a user, add /bin/bash behind the line for that user's ID. I don't think anyone who's been using RedHat and not particlularly experienced with linux is going to know that this is the problem. I had been asking this on various message boards for almost a year and, basically, just had to figure it out.. Mystery solved.
