VLC not playing DVDs.

I've been a big fan of VLC, but since doing a fresh install of Slackware 12.2 and Alien Bob's vlc 0.9.9 package, VLC has stopped
playing DVDs. It brings up the menu page of the DVD and then freezes, skipping the copyright warnings altogether.

Kaffeine, using the Xine engine, plays the same DVD beautifully.

Just ran it from a console and it gave this error when I tried to play a DVD:

Code:
[00000501] freetype spu text error: failed to load font file /usr/share/vlc/skins2/fonts/FreeSerifBold.ttf
[00000521] a52 decoder: A/52 channels:2 samplerate:48000 bitrate:192000
No accelerated IMDCT transform found
FreeSerifBold.ttf is not in the directory named above, nor anywhere on the system.
From what I can tell after "googleing" around, "accelerated IMDCT transform found" is not the problem.

Any ideas toward a solution would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

if you google on "FreeSerifBold.ttf" the first hit is this link http://sysinf0.klabs.be/usr/share/fo...tf?dist=;arch=
Seems you can download the font there, and if you put it in above directory that error should be gone.

You'll find FreeFont in SlackBuilds.org.

Thank you Ramurd and W1k0 for taking the time to reply, but I've tried that and it didn't solve the problem.

Any other ideas?

Thanks, again.

If VLC didn't work for you, try MPlayer!
I got both players installed on my box just incase either of them isn't working.

MPlayer and its codecs are available in Slackbuilds.org

MPlayer and VLC are two of the best media players in Linux.

Have Fun!!

Thanks. I've never had much luck with MPlayer and don't care for the interface, but, as I said, I'm a big fan of VLC and, until now, used it for almost everything related to multimeda. However, Kaffeine
has greatly improved in recent years and is now running a close second to VLC, in my book.

Did you compile it your self or did you grab the package? (the package is compiled "USE_PATENTS=NO" but that should only effect AMR)

The DVD playback was broken in my vlc-0.9.9 package. I hate it when the internals of a program change so much between versions that stuff breaks, then works again, then breaks again.

I have now built a binary for vlc-1.0.0.pre2 which works here (including DVD playback). It took a while because the vlc-1.0.0-pre2 tarball refused to compile on slackware 12.2 (but has no issues on slackware-current). I had to come up with the proper patch.

I will package it and upload soon. The "restricted" package aka the package with all the patent-prone encoders will be uploaded first because that is ready (at http://slackware.org.uk/people/alien...uilds/vlc/pkg/) and then I will build a package that I am allowed to upload to the US server (i.e. http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/)

All this time, I've been downloading the US version without the patents. No wonder I couldn't get certain videos to play. Thanks Eric for all your great work!!
