dvds not playing

I insert the DVD and here is what I put and what I get back. The thing says open but it hangs for ever, nothing ever comes up and the computer is running slow until I close the console I was using.

nothing much useful there... try adding a -v to the command line. All i can see is you're using libdvdread, rather than the libmpdvdkit2 that comes along with mplayer-0.90, remove dvdread, and make sure that dvdkit2 is enabled in mplayer's ./configure. that and it should be crop=720:340 not x.
