VLC: 'your input cannot be opened'
Dear Slackers
Slackware 14.2, updated daily, XFCE. No KDE packages
VLC from alien bob repository. libdvdcss, qts, qt5-webkit, libkcommon are also installed
Trying to play old VCD. VCD good. Plays on another laptop loaded with win7.

Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'vcd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.
Can some body pl. point out the issue? Maybe obvious to punters here...

/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,owner,ro,comment=x-gvfs-show 0 0

devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
In VLC, I have changed /dev/sr0 to /dev/cdrom, it says now /dev/cdrom cannot beopened
Earlier, in /etc/fstab, the /dev/cdrom was commented out. I un-commented it

Is this Alien Bob's VLC? If so, have a look at

Also: Did
this VLC on
this installation ever play a DVD before?
Also: Have a look at Alien Bob's VLC2.

vcd requires if I am not Wrong
https://slackbuilds.org/repository/1...?search=libdvd
libraries,libdvdcss,dvd,css,encryption,decryption,library,libdvdread,libdvdnav,mplayer,libdvd
full circle i do not know why not playing. but buld your own vlc see if it is a ACC ffmpg issue

that is a libdvdnav and libdvdread your sr0 device is loading fine.
if you really want to use the word cdrom do to multiple C or D ROM devices fine
mount /dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom
but that really defeats the purpose of sr0 sr1 etc

It is video on a CD (hence, VCD). They are really limited in resolution compared to what we have today. For NTSC, you're limited to 352×240 resolution. And you can have up to 74 minutes on the disc.
@OP, can you also try playing the vcd using mplayer to see if it gives any better error messages? I haven't dealt with VCDs in probably 15 years, so I don't remember what types of requirements they may need software wise. Playing it through mplayer might give us a more concise error message that can help us find out what the problem is.
