Virtual Box suddenly stopped working

Ok I was using Virtual Box just fine but after doing quite a bit of clean up (thank you, bleachbit,a problem has erupted.

Quote:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Boss.

Failed to load VMMR0.r0 (VERR_SUPLIB_OWNER_NOT_ROOT).

Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {8ab7c520-2442-4b66-8d74-4ff1e195d2b6}
My normal user is already added to vboxusers, so that can't be the problem.

Hmm, check the /usr/lib and /usr/lib/virtualbox permissions - sometimes those can get screwed up.

Are you using VirtualBox from Oracle?

That's installed in /opt/VirtualBox, owner, group root, mask 755. Everything in that directory should look like this:
Code:
cd /opt/VirtualBox
ls -a

Your /etc/rc.d should look like this:
Code:
cd /etc/rc.d
ls -al *vbox*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root  6796 Oct 13 14:30 rc.vboxautostart-service*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 10140 Oct 13 14:30 rc.vboxballoonctrl-service*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 12680 Oct 13 14:30 rc.vboxdrv*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root  9917 Oct 13 14:30 rc.vboxweb-service*
Other than that, just in case something got blown away or screwed up, just reinstall VirtualBox:
Code:
su -
/opt/VirtualBox/uninstall.sh
<wait a while>
cd to directory where VirtualBox*amd64.run or VirtualBox*.run (32-bit) is
execute that
<wait awhile>
install the Guest Additions and Extension Pack.
That won't do anything to your existing virtual machines but it will clean up any screwy stuff for you (and it'll only take about 10 minutes to do.

Hope this helps some.

Yes, a reinstall may be in order.

Did you clean some stuff up on you own too? I download and installed Bleachbit (from Slackbuilds using version 1.6) to see if it did anything to my VirtualBox installation, sure glad they have a preview option. I could find nothing that should affect VirtualBox.

I use the Oracle provide installation as mentioned above by tronayne.

"Bleachbit, The unnecessary file cleaner" says it all in my opinion, emphasis mine

Did you upgrade your Kernel? That will play games with VirtualBox.

The latest kernel upgrade on --Current borked my VirtualBox on two machines. modprobe vboxdrv started return a "fatal error."

Reinstalling VB and its dependencies fixed the problem and all my VMs were intact.

You don't need to reinstall VBox after a new kernel install. You just need to "/etc/rc.d/rc.vboxdrv setup" and it will recompile/reinstall/start the kernel modules.

Always has to be one, reinstall is reinstall. Does not matter how you get there.

For a reinstall you'll need the archive handy. With the rc script you just run a script and you're set to go. It's just a lot faster.
