Hey there, I wanted to experiment some with Gnome the other day, so I installed it along side KDE and editted my .xinitrc from startkde to exec gnome-session. Now by default, will it use the gdm because it is starting Gnome not KDE, or will it use kdm? And also, is there some way I can configure the .xinitrc file so that I can have an option of starting either KDE or Gnome when I type startx? Maybe by passing an argument? Thanks.

Maybe you know this already-but if you want the ability to choose your windowmanager at graphical log-in you might want to check out DLG. http://dropline-gnome.sourceforge.net/
I think it's great!

If its installed, gdm is the first one called by /etc/rc.d/rc.4. If it can't find gdm, then it will look for kdm and then xdm. This is still the case with 10.2. Refer to /etc/rc.d/rc.4 for more info.

Yeah I remember this now from my days using Slack. I always commented out GDM coz I am not too keen on it, so kdm was always started regardless of whether GNOME or KDE was the default DE.
