I didn't set it up myself, I wouldn't no how to...

I don't know what driver I'm using,

and my video card is (I believe) a rage ati 128.

None of those files are there, so I'll try reinstalling X.

Before you reinstall, save your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

After you reinstall the X, look here for more config help with setting the Rage128
http://freedesktop.org/~xorg/X11R6.7.0/doc/r128.4.html
Summary:
Everything is pretty much autodetected or good as default. Just make sure that you see "r128" in section "Device" in your /ect/X11/xorg.conf

Example:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Whatever the name that is already here"
  Driver "r128"
EndSection

Hang on, are you using dual monitors (or possibly TV-out)? Is the Rage128 evem capable of dual-monitor output?

If not, you don't even need Xinerama, so either 1) get rid of the setting that wants it (probably in your X configuration file), or 2) ignore the error.

Hi

I also had the same problem but, I've fixed it now.

Like you, I downloaded all the tarballs for KDE 3.3 for Slackware and installed them using "installpkg" (because I never had a previous KDE install). I then created an .xinitrc file in my home dir and added exec startkde. Upon executing "startx" it failed with a message about kdeinit. But if you read errors it mentions that "qt" is required.

So, to fix the problem I downloaded version 3.3.2 of qt from slackware's 10.0 ftp tree (it's also on your CD) and installed it using "installpkg". Then I ran "startx" and KDE loads perfectly.

Here is a link to the file: ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...3.2-i486-2.tgz

I hope this cures your problem too.

I heard some hoopla about "KDE now fully supporting Xinerama! Yey!" etc. I guess it means that now it's the required lib, even if it isnt used. progress!

Well, I don't know what I did or how I went wrong, but I got fed up and re installed slack, so now I'm back where I started.

Could someone who has upgraded kde before tell me how to go about things step by step.

Maybe some precautions before downloading all the tarballs and doing upgradepkg *.tgz.

Note: when I did that command before, I was running kde, prehaps I could change to gnome or something else before running that command?

Any help is appreciated.

Oh, and I'm not using any dual monitors or anything special like that, just a normal setup.

Try booting to a command prompt and installing from there. I did upgrade twice to 3.3 from within KDE with no problems. Once with a current Slackware and once with a fresh install of 10. Hope it works better this time

I am not sure if I'm the correct person for this cause I seemed to fail to help you previously....

This works only for upgrading a working KDE 3.2.3 to 3.3

1. Download packages from a kde.org mirror to a folder.
I got:
Code:
arts-1.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdebase-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdenetwork-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz
kdeaccessibility-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdebindings-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdepim-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz
kdeaddons-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdegraphics-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdesdk-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz
kdeadmin-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdelibs-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdeutils-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz
kdeartwork-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdemultimedia-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz kdewebdev-3.3.0-i486-1.tgz
I skipped (for lack of need) kdetoys and kdegames.

2. For good measure, switch to GUI-less root environment (you dont have to, but it feels better this way.)
a. Ensure that your /etc/inittab file has "3", not "4" on the following line.
Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:
b. Reboot
c. login as root

3. Go to the folder you have downloaded packages to (cd [folder name]), and:
a. "removepkg quanta*.tgz" <- Removes Quanta if installed
b. "upgradepkg *.tgz" <- upgrades already installedkde*'s and arts*
c. "installpkg kdewebdev*.tgz" <- Installs Quanta if needed.

4. Change init level back to 4 (for those who changed it in #2)
You may use "mc" in console. Works like Norton Commander (anyone remembers it yet?) Navigate to /etc/inittab and press F4. Double ESC to save and exit.

5. Reboot.

Worked for me.

I'm currently on kde 3.1... not 3.2.

Will this method still work?

Heh, don't worry about not being able to help, everything helps.

It was probably me that did something wrong.

8| The fact that you are running Slack older than v.10 would be usefull knowledge on page 1.

This changes the whole game plan. Your libs are older. QT for example have to be upped to at least 3.3.2. God knows what else you need to up. The Slack10 KDE3.3 is built against Slack10's QT and XORG server/extensions. Slack 9.x's have Xfree86... Im affraid you will not be able to use the Slack 10 build from kde.org

Look through this list http://kde.org/info/requirements/3.3.php for other things.

I also suggest to open a new thread with a subject clearly indicating that you are trying to up Slack 9.x, KDE 3.1.x to 3.3.

Heh, I'm sorry...I figured you could gather that I was on something under 10, being as how slack 10 comes with kde 3.3 as well as the new kernel.

But at any rate, I'm running slackware 9.1, with kde 3.1.4, as well as have quanta 3.1.4 installed.

Does that help?

Any ideas when kde 3.3 is going to make it into slack-current (based on previous kde upgrade time periods)?

I just upgraded to kde 3.3 no problem, your supposed to remove all kde packages first and the install the new ones, instead of upgrading. Here is what I did step by step: (thanks to the guys on #slackware for helping me through it).

Find a Kde ftp of slack packages to get all I files, I used ftp://ftp.oregonstate.edu/pub/kde/st...ackware/10.0/. Make a directory for all the kde 3.3 files. (I used /home/user/kde3.3)
Now cd into that directory and get all the packages using wget
Next, switch to text console and remove all the kde 3.2 packages using pkgtool.
Code:
init 3
removepkg *kde*
The wildcards ensure it removes all packages installed containing the string kde.

Now, just install all packages in your kde3.3 directory.
Code:
installpkg /path/to/kde3.3downloads/*.tgz
Now switch back to init 4 or startx and enjoy!
